Monochrome printers are perfect for printing black and white text pages that don’t require color or need to be printed in bulk. Laser monochrome printers are often considered to do a much better job in terms of resolution and for printing fine-quality details and crisp resolution for type. They are also much faster than inkjet printers. Similar to photocopiers, black and white laser printers use toner made from a fine plastic dust. During the printing process these small plastic particles are fused together and bonded to the paper, creating the final printed text or image.

Laser printers operate by using a laser to create positive and negative charged areas on a rotating drum. The toner, which carries a positive charge, adheres to the negative charged areas on the drum and is subsequently heated, becoming tacky in the process. Paper is passed through the drum and the toner then sticks to the paper, creating the image as the heated toner particles are transferred from the drum to the paper. As the toner cools down, it bonds to the paper.

Since the toner requires heating in order to bind to the paper, the printer needs to “warm up” before operation. More advanced laser printers can warm up in just a few seconds while older models can take some time to become fully operational.

There are a few things to look out for when shopping for the best monochrome laser printer for your needs. Resolution is an indication of how crisp the printer can render text and images. Higher resolution means sharper images and smoother grayscale gradients. At the bare minimum a mono laser printer should have a minimum resolution of 600 with better models in the 1200+ range for dpi. Also check the printer’s capability to print pages larger than standard 8.5 x11. Often you may find the need to print pages that are 11×17.

Also certain higher end models have the ability to print on both sides of the paper, making it more environmental friendly and cost effective over time. This feature is called duplex printing and can be a time saver when compared to flipping pages over manually. However, this feature can add cost to the purchase price of the laser printer.

When shopping for the best laser monochrome printers please keep a few things in mind. First, be sure to check the monochrome printer’s compatibility with your computer system. Mac and PC have some different requirements, as do the various operating systems for each platform.  Also, be sure that your printer has networking capability if you are printing from various computers. This means that your monochrome printer will need to have an Ethernet card (although newer models will be network-ready or even wireless).

If you plan to do a high level of printing, make sure that the printer that you choose has high-paper capacity as well as a fan to handle overheating when printing large volumes of documents.

There are often many deals on the Internet for you to do a price comparison on laser printers. Monochrome laser printers can make a huge difference to business and home office productivity. Choosing the right one can save you money and time in the long run.
